I just got this forward from my grandma... its a sample menu from Woolworth's in the 1950's.
We used to have one of these in Roanoke. I remember going to it as a kid, and I think the prices were only slightly higher in the 80s.
I want a 25 cent two scoop ice cream sunday :)

Wow, does that bring back memories. We had Woolworth in NYC as well, though I don't recall prices that cheap for sundaes (I may be as old as your parents, but not your grandparents ;-)
FYI, 25c in 1950 had the buying power of $2.27 today, so that would still be a good deal!! Best deal I know of in Raleigh is NC State U ice cream at the Emporium Ice Cream Shoppe in the Talley Student Center - two scoops for $1 and it's great stuff. And you can buy quantity directly from Food Science ... http://www.ncsu.edu/foodscience/PilotPlant/DairyProducts.htm.

It would be easy to spend a while using the buying calculator... I checked out the price of gas and 4.07 translates to $33.23 in 1955. Wow! or 50c the other way around.
I do miss the emporium ice cream shop and love getting ice cream at every year at the state fair. I didn't know that you could order it like that though, so I might have to do that next time I want some ice cream. The only problem is that its 3 gallons. Do you know if you can get it in smaller quantities?
